Kindergarten Thanksgiving Feast

The day before Thanksgiving Break, Mrs. Bolton's and Mrs. Schoofs' classes joined us for our very own Thanksgiving Feast.  It was a great way to spend time together before break and we all enjoyed the delicious treats!

Turkey Hideouts!

In this STEM challenge, the day before Thanksgiving Break, we worked together to make a Group Plan to build a turkey hideout so our turkey would not get eaten on Thanksgiving!  We used hundreds, tens, and ones blocks for this challenge and it was not as easy as it appeared!  What great problem-solving strategies!

Our Thanksgiving Tables

So I'm finally getting caught up with uploading all of the pictures I've been taking!  I will try to add more posts of what we have been doing now that I have all the pictures where they need to be!  Here is a peek at a STEM activity we did just before Thanksgiving.  We used dominoes and popsicle sticks to build a table to fit all of our food, without any overlapping!  It was amazing to see the variety of ways these little engineers came up with to solve this problem!

50th Day of School!

50s Day for our 50th Day!

We will be celebrating our 50th day of school on TUESDAY, November 15th.    To do so, we will be having 50s day.  We have lots of fun activities planned including a Race to 50 and Rock-n-Roll Patterns to work on math skills.  We will be listening to 50s music and having a mini “sock hop.”     We invite your child to dress in 50s attire for the day!

We will be having a Coke Float as a little snack (along with some sink/float predictions) to add to the celebration. If you would prefer for your child not to take part in this treat, please be sure to let us know in advance.  Thank you!

We look forward to celebrating with your child!

Pumpkin Carving!

One of the many FUN learning opportunities we had this month was PUMPKIN CARVING!  We worked in teams to decide what kind of face we wanted our pumpkins to have and then scoop and carve them.  We enjoyed talking about how the seeds and 'guts' felt, smelled and looked.  We each took a turn (or several) to scoop out the insides and then everyone had a turn to help carve out the face.  Special thanks to Mrs. Handrich, Miss Staehler, and Mrs. Wilson for their help on this project!

And here are the final products!

A Visit From the Fire Fighters!

To support our instruction on Fire Safety, the Plover Fire Fighters spent some time with us!  They read a wonderful story called No Dragons for Tea and then showed us what a fire fighter looks like when he puts on all his gear!  We are so thankful they came to visit!

Fun with Fall Leaves!

You may have seen our Leaf Experiment paper come home.  Here is a peek at what that looked like in the classroom!  We looked at the leaf details and talked about different types of leaves, we measured height with unifix cubes, we measured area with pennies, we even counted how long it took our leaf to twirl down to the ground as if it were falling from a tree.  As always, we loved this hand on learning!

Pumpkin Fun in Library!

Here is a peek at what we have been up to with Mrs. Peterson and Mrs. Cychosz in library!  Mrs. Peterson read the book Spookley, the Square Pumpkin and then the class celebrated how differences make us special by making their jack-o-lantern hats with their own special touches!  I think it's obvious that everyone had a great time!

STEM Shapes

Last week we had our first SUPER STEM session!  It is my goal to provide these weekly.  STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math.  You may hear of STEAM, as well.  This includes art, but because we still fit a lot of art into our day I stuck with STEM for our purposes.  The goal of STEM is to encourage problem solving, cooperative learning, and hands on activities.  Our first STEM activity was a simple one, but it was met with rave reviews!  We spent our time building shapes with popsicle sticks, using some simple instructions as out guide.  From there we explored how we could build other things, such as houses, out of the shapes we had already made.  This week we enjoyed our second STEM session as we experimented with apples... there will be pictures posted soon of all of our apple fun!

The Beginnings of Reading!

Hopefully you heard your child talking about practicing READING last week!  Yes, we have been kindergartners for only 12 days and we are already working on reading.  What this looks like right now is: practicing reading (looking at wordless picture books) quietly on our own.  We started at 2 minutes and slowly built up to 12 minutes by the end of last week.  This group has done a phenomenal job!  We talked about the different ways to read a book and how everyone in our room is already a reader because EVERYONE can do at least one of those ways (look at the pictures).  This is why we start with wordless picture books!  This week we will be using the books that we 'shopped' for in our classroom library.  Our goal is to make it to 15 minutes of quiet reading.  Once we have met this goal, I will be able to pull small groups for Guided Reading instruction and do the assessments that need done in kindergarten!

Picture Day!

This is just a reminder that
